For best results of softness and expansion, use a hot liquid to soak them. Soak the hardtack stick in a savory hot liquid for a few minutes and it will absorb some of the flavor as it starts to soften and swell. When softened they expand and can be as chewy or soft; it just depends on the temperature of the liquid and the length of time you soak them.
What is REAL HARDTACK?
There is a difference between emergency crackers to put jelly on and real genuine hardtack.
Our hardtack has almost zero oxygen and moisture even after the package is open because of the way our hardtack is made.
Real hardtack resists water and oxygen so it needs to be soaked for a long time before eating
, preferably in a hot liquid.
Canister crackers are more like oxygen and water absorbers that tend to spoil shortly after opening depending on your environment!
We sell real hardtack with the same historically extremely long shelf life protection in an easier-to-use shape.
WARNINGS:
Our genuine hardtack is as hard as the traditionally made product throughout history but ours is made with modern equipment such as commercial convection ovens monitored to control and reduce the moisture content as much as possible, then rebaked as needed. This means UNLESS FULLY SOAKED, our hardtack can be just as hard to chew as the kind created in historical times.
